My Indie Cousin

Straits Times, Life! 22 Jan 2010
My cousin Gabriel was in the newspaper!
Gabriel
(far right with the huge hair, is really my cousin and I do realise we don't look anything alike)
is from
a local indie band in Singapore
(if only I was so cool).
The caption compares the success of indie bands versus local Chinese pop singers Stefanie Sun and JJLin (who?).
Forgive me if I am wrong but isn't Stefanie Sun a commercial artiste?
Why draw a comparison with commercial success?
Isn't indie (independent) the polar opposite of commercial?
Isn't it what gives indie music its appeal?
Music for music sake, regardless of commercial success?
Cos honestly, I really doubt Gabs will want to support charity TV shows by walking the tight rope, dance in a concert covered completely in body glitter, feathers in his hair and pyro blasting in the background....
