Robin Hood & Yoga

Seejia showing us how to enjoy the forest...

Yesterday we went to Sherwood Forest, home of Robin Hood. Ok it wasn't exactly the most exciting place to go to. But it is a must since I am here. Besides trees, bushes and a suspicious collection of mushrooms, Sherwood Forest was just a forest... just with a long history.. (which honestly, makes it creepy). I couldn't find any men in green tights!

Today I went to "Freshers' Fayre" which is when all the freshmen (and clueless exchange students) go to, to sign up for clubs and societies. You won't imagine the kind of societies they have here. Cheese Society, Chocolate Society and Pirate Society - the strangest societies I could find that had their booths among more common clubs like hockey and football, all in a large white marquee on campus. I joined Yoga Society, New Theatre, Architecture Society and Travel Society. So maybe I got a little carried away with the signing up. Just that the process of signing up looked so much like shopping, I couldn't help myself! Each freshmen is given a voucher, when they decide to join a society, the person at the booth will stick a barcode on it. After you made your decisions and collected (usually more than 1) barcodes for the societies you wish to join, you queue up and the "cashier" scans it in and you pay the total amount for your membership fees! What a gimmick! haha and obviously, I fell into the trap!

Pity we didn't manage to get tickets to Alton Towers on Saturday so I might go for a party on Friday night and go shopping on Saturday afternoon (yipee too!). I hope people here think I'm cool. I doubt.

You Want to Exchange-Friends?

Everyone is worried if I can make friends here....so here's just a few I met who are also on exchange!

Queenie at Nottingham City Centre with tiny but SWEET strawberries from a street stall.

Russell & I at the lakeside in our school. Don't ask why Seejia is smiling to the floor!

Well, even if I chase all these people away, I can always count on Stevie, the wild goose, to befriend me.

When Does School REALLY Start?

Oh My Gosh. Sorry for not blogging for bloody long. The Internet here is HORRIBLE. I have problems with the Internet and the school portal. When I called the help line, they asked me to send them an email cos they are "extremely busy at the moment". HELLO? If I could access my email, you think I want to call the helpline to chat ah?

Anyway I have just moved into my new room, which will be my home for the next couple of months. I was really lucky to be located in the new block of the Ancaster Hall which was only built 6 years ago, compared to the main block which was built 40+ years ago. But, I still got all my disinfectants from Sainsbury's and Wilkinsons to clean and scrub. Don't judge me! I promise I will post pictures of my room once I receive my stuff from Singapore and properly do up my room till I can feel fully at home.

Week 1 in Nottingham is NOTHING LIKE NUS. I only register for my modules on Friday (by the way, registration is MANUAL haha). In the mean time, there are so many parties (parties, not panties) and day trips planned during the week. Today I went to Cadbury World with Stephanie. Oh my gosh... popcorn and warm liquid chocolate on top.... BESTEST! There is also a day trip to Sherwood Forest (to find Robin Hood and the other men in green tights!) And Saturday there is a trip to Alton Towers, which is a huge theme park. I hope we manage to get tickets for those. At night (every night), the hall bars are busy and buses bring party-goers to clubs for a night out. It is insane. The "Chancellor's Welcome" - which was by the Vice-Chancellor to the freshmen was CRAZY. At 9pm, 6000 people packed into a dark sports hall that was miraculously changed into a Rave! Throbbing lights, pyro and palpitating music! Nothing like our "Dean's Tea". The culture here is just mad. Wish everyone was here to see this... it is just too much to explain.

London to Nottingham

I have not been able to settle my internet in my hall room till now. So I have a lot to say. I arrived in the University Nottingham after a 3+hr bus ride from Heathrow Airport.

We're now in our temporary halls at Sherwood. It's quite old but the company is good.

Dinner? was disgusting on the first night. SWEET AND SOUR PORK WITH RICE. BAD CHOICE.

We were all amused to see geese crossing the road.

The Trent Building with the Lake!

I kind of miss London's Leicester Square and the craziness of London. The night before we left for Nottingham, Seejia and I visited Tate(we intend to go back at least one more time) and watched Wicked! I hope we'll go back soon.

Tate

I still miss home. It feels lonely when I realise I won't see everyone till later. Much later. I still cry. Hopefully it will get better.

Went Gallery Hopping. I always ended up spending more time in the galery-shops instead

He ain't Heavy, He's my Bladder

Thanks to those who sent me off and wished me well before I left Singapore.

I ran off and was the last person to board the plane. The 2-4-2 configuration on the A380, landed me an aisle seat with an ang mo guy sitting next to me. Surprisingly, he didn't wake me to use the toilet for 12 hours. He's amazing.

After 20 minutes into the flight, I suddenly felt very homesick. I wished the plane would turn around. I realised it was too late. It had only dawned on me that suddenly, I won't be seeing everyone for 3 months. Talk about delayed reactions.

After the 13 hour flight, which was also prolonged because of Heathrow's crazy air traffic, I finally landed to be greeted by a 1.5 hour immigration queue! Alone and lugging my laptop, I started to think about the people I was going to miss again.

I took a cab (which costed me 55 pounds) to the hotel. And only after checking-in into my room, I finally let it go. So much tears.. I just couldn't stop crying.

Luckily, Molly called me about an hour later to ask if I wanted her to see me. It just suddenly felt so good to see her.

Picks for the Biennale

This is Sally. One of the Red Carpet crawling friends I made at City Hall.

Yesterday (which was Friday, my apologies cos my blog os working on a different time zone) I went to visit City Hall and the Shigeru Ban pavilion. I really enjoyed the crazy artwork at City Hall.. Pity I don't have the opportunity to visit the South Beach Development.

Tips
Listen to me!
1) Bring a camera (or a few), unlike the last time, photography at the Biennale is almost highly encouraged.
2) Bring your student card to pay $5 instead of $10 for your ticket to all 3 payable locations.
3) Wear comfortable shoes. I saw a girl in crazy heels. I was praying she would topple over one of Ngoc Duong's Maggots.

Stuff to Look Out for
Die die, cannot miss..
1) Sergio Prego's Black Monday (City Hall)
2) Desiree Dorlon's Xterior I,II,IV, VIII (City Hall)
3) Jane Lee's Raw Canvas (City Hall)

Grand Award for Effort!
Can't believe anyone will spend so much time doing this...
- Jong-Gun Han's Evolutional Mythology (City Hall)
This guy massaged gourds when they grew so they would resemble human faces!

Award for Artwork I Wish I could Bring Home
-Pham, Ngoc Duong's Maggots (City Hall)

This time around, the biennale is more accessible to the layman like me. Symbolisms are easy to grasp as the works are relatively more literal than the last Biennale. I think it is important to go with an open mind, ditch reading the explanations and enjoy the works as they are.

I wish I can stay on... but I'm leaving tonight. So please tell me what I've missed!

Nothing like a Computer telling You that You are a WEIRDO

You Are 56% Weirdo

You're definitely quite strange, but you can act like a normal person when you have to.

(But just because you can act normally, it certainly doesn't mean you want to!)

You have normal aspects to your personality... but you usually don't choose to emphasize them.

3 Days till I Leave

I have so much packing to do. I thought I was done when I realised I had forgotten about packing clothes. I've asked Prawn to come over tommorrow to help me seal my "zip-lock" bags to keep them flat. But I realised Prawn is too light and her surface area is way too small, I wonder how that is going to go.

I am still quite troubled and uneasy.... tried to pack a few friends in my luggage.... some were obviously too big.... but I won't mention names...
